Toyota Recall : How do we define safety?

Woodrow Neyman: Safe accurate steering, accurate and safe transmission shifting, safe and accurate brake systems that stop the car 100% of the time, Gas accelerators that never stick are safe....engine sludge which seizes up and engine and stops running where you happen to be --not safe.....Cars that are wind blown and do not hold the road with safety at 55 mph. Trucks that do not break in two parts on the highway because of severe and hidden under-body rust is safety. Minivans whose driver doors do not fall off because of cheap welds, and whose under-body spare tires do not fall to the street while driving because of under-body rust. Oswaldo Rayburn: To be honest it's more about perception than anything. That's why big giant Trucks and SUV's were all the rage. Simply because people thought that because they were big and had a lot of "metal" they! were safe. We found out quickly this wasn't the case, but it didn't stop them from being sold in record numbers. The Public doesn't care about actual safety. They want the illusion of safety. If they feel safe than it must be right?Even small cars with excellent safety ratings don't sell as well, as large cars. We define it as being able to survive a crash I think. But like I said. It's really more about perception than reality.You'll have to forgive Alan. He doesn't really pay attention to the question at hand. He likes Toyota so much he lurks here and talks about them constantly. If he had actually bothered to read the question rather than just using this as a soapbox to whine. Marna Liddie: all media hype,,,there was never anything wrong with the pedals,they still havent found anything wrong with them,,,,sudden acceration happens everyday with every typ of ! car,safty comes first in the driver,you be be in a tank if you! go off a clift your a goner,,,,toyota cars are still the safest cars out there,i mean even the small yaris has side airbags,can you say the same about the small gms or fords?
