Travis Colomb: And what does "values" mean, in this case?
Forest Duttinger: People believe whatever they see on television is acceptable behavior. That's what makes it so dangerous.
Margy Sandquist: Television, IMHO, is the totem of modern society. It feeds any culture its shared identity by reflecting its beliefs and concerns... Simply because if it didn't, it would alienate its audience and lose money.Last night's TV is something that workmates and schoolchildren all over the country talk about in the mornings. The flipside is that people will then, in turn, rely on the TV to tell them what's "in" - as it's become their society's shared experience... If they don't watch it regularly, they end up on the outside of their cultural group because they're ignorant of the latest music/celebrity/entertainment trend. Now that people stay at home more, rather than the social club atmosphere of community pubs (which became much thinner on the ground as the slums were b! ulldozed after the 1930s) they rely on the TV (and tabloids) to glean what their neighbours' concerns are. From personal experience: I don't ever watch TV any more (through choice) and consequently I haven't much clue who or what is at the focus of my own society right now... Something I didn't expect to find - but that happened very quickly indeed....Show more
